Creation Walk - Wild Strawberries

Today we went on a walk to find some things God made that are red to add to our Creation Journal. We barely made it down our dirt road when Gavin and Haley spotted some wild strawberries!

Haley ate hers along the way of course, but Gavin is methodical when it comes to his findings...He is a collector, a saver, and he has to really think about what he is going to do with his discoveries. So far he has washed them, counted them (there are 19) and is thinking about making wild-strawberry banana popsicles.

I have a friend who is searching for all of the superfoods native to Maine. She mentioned to me once about edible mushrooms that grow here in Maine with medicinal properties and considered a superfood. Apparently wild strawberries are very nutrient-rich with several medicinal properties as well - some that I'd never even heard of! Here is a really informative clip about wild strawberries with a yummy recipe at the end :)

I'm definitely going to order a field guide like this one or along the same lines, one specific to New England. I think its a great idea to have on hand, especially since we're outdoors a lot and going on these creation walks. Also, I think its smart to acquire certain survival skills and knowledge of plant life - you just never know when you might need them!
